Cow vigilantes assault Muslim man in UP, cops file case against victim

The incident took place in a village located in the limits of Katghar Police Station in Moradabad.

On Sunday, a Muslim man, who is in the business of selling and transporting meat was assaulted by a group of men who termed themselves as ‘gau rakshak’. 

However, Uttar Pradesh police have filed a case against the leader of the group which attacked the Muslim man, based on the complaint registered by the victim’s brother.  On the other hand, the police also registered a counter case on the victim, who was identified as Mohammed Shakir. 

The counter case is related to the IPC sections ‘mischief by killing an animal’, ‘committing an act likely to spread infection’ and ‘violation of Covid lockdown guidelines’.

Deputy Superintendent of police, posted in that area told media that Shakir has been arrested but is not behind the bars as the sections invoked against him are bailable. Shakir’s family has confirmed that he is at home and recovering.

The leader, identified as Manoj Thakur has not been arrested yet, while other four members have been arrested, and two of the members are on the run, said Moradabad police on Monday. 

Prabhakar Choudhary, the Moradabad Police Chief in a statement said, “We got a video of the mead-seller being beaten up and we have filed a case. There are five to six accused who have been named. We are carrying out searches and will arrest them soon.”

In a video, Shakir is surrounded by Manoj and other men. Manoj then attacks Shakir with a stick and he falls on the ground.
