CU video leak case: Rankaj Verma gets bail after 18 days; accused jawan sent to jail

Rankaj Verma was granted regular bail on Thursday by Kharar Court after being arrested in connection with a case involving a viral video of girls at Chandigarh University (CU). He was given regular bail on a bond of Rs 1 lakh. Due to a lack of time on Thursday, the bail bond's formalities could not be finished. Due to this circumstance, Rankaj will be released on Friday.

On the other hand, Sanjeev Singh, who was arrested from Arunachal Pradesh on September 24, has been sent to jail after his three-day remand is over. He spent the previous 8 days in custody. The married soldier was said to be in a relationship with the accused university student. The student said that she was being blackmailed and asked to give recordings of girls at the same time. However, it has been reported that no offensive footage of any other university student has been discovered so far in the preliminary investigation from any of the accused's phones. Along with the accused's phones, the hard drive that was retrieved from the soldier's Jammu home has been sent in for forensic examination.

According to Rankaj Verma's lawyer Harvinder Singh Johal, the necessary paperwork to have his client released from custody will be finished tomorrow. Rankaj Verma was arrested by the Punjab Police on September 18. He was sent to jail after 12 days of police remand.

In his bail application, Rankaj had declared himself completely innocent and it was termed as a case of the wrong identity. His DP picked up from Facebook was used by the accused. Rankaj claimed that he never met or contacted Sunny Mehta, accused student and soldier Sanjeev Singh of Rohru (Shimla). Call details of his phone etc can also be checked. In a court appearance, the charged soldier also raised his hand and assured that he was innocent.

The case was registered on the complaint of DSW Ritu Ranaut of CU. Rajwinder Kaur, the warden of the girls' hostel, informed her that several of the female residents suspect a girl is filming in their washroom. The accused girl admitted during questioning that she had created a video and sent it to Sunny Mehta, his Shimla-based boyfriend.

According to Ritu Ranaut, the accused girl was receiving video calls frequently. In such a situation, the girl was asked to send the video or photo to the person concerned, if it is on her phone. The authorities opened an investigation into the incident after discovering the video on the girl's phone.
