Who is Jolly Joseph?

Originally hailing from Kattappana, Idukki district, Jolly Joseph is the prime accused in the sensational Kerala cyanide murders. Jolly Joseph aka Jolly Amma Joseph was arrested in October 2019 for killing six members of her family including a 2-year-old infant in a span of 14 years by using cyanide.

As per the information available, Jolly married her first husband Roy Thomas in 1997, however, 2011, he died under mysterious circumstances, Jolly had two sons with Roy at that time. Jolly then did a second marriage with Shaju Zachariah. Jolly married Shaju Zachariah after her first wife died in 2016.

Notably, the killings started in 2002 when Annamma Thomas, the mother-in-law of the accused, drank a glass of water after returning home from a walk. Immediately afterwards, she began to feel uneasy and dizzy, eventually collapsing on the floor. She was taken to the hospital where she later died, and the doctors declared that she had suffered a heart attack.

Thereafter, in 2008, Tom Thomas, Annamma's husband passed away after swooning and collapsing. Their daughter-in-law Jolly Joseph was allegedly present on the spot on both occasions. In 2011, Roy Thomas, Jolly's then-husband, died after consuming rice and curry. He was found dead in a bathroom which was locked from the inside. The cause of death was then ruled as suicide due to financial issues as the post-mortem report showed traces of poison.

Jolly Joseph came under on Kerala Police radar when Rojo Thomas, son of Tom Thomas, filed a complaint in 2019 expressing suspicions about the deaths. Discrepancies in the initial findings prompted the police to open the family grave, leading to the discovery that all six deaths were, in fact, murders. In the autopsy, traces of cyanide were found.

Finally, in October 2019, Jolly was arrested and during the interrogation, she confessed of the serial killings. As per reports, Jolly did the killings to take over the properties. Apart from Jolly, her relative M.S. Mathew, responsible for supplying cyanide to her, and the goldsmith Prajikumar, who furnished cyanide to Mathew, were also arrested.

Where is Jolly Joseph now?

As last reported, Jolly was at the district jail in Kozhikode. Notably, Jolly attempted multiple suicides in jail, however, she was saved by the inmates and administration. Also, the Kerala High Court granted her bail in August 2020, but the Kerala government moved the Supreme Court against the order. As a result, the SC put a stay on her release. The High Court had noted that the case against her was based on an extra-judicial confession made after so many years of the alleged murders.
