Punjab Police has raised a high-level cyber alert regarding a malware campaign named "Dance of the Hillary," which is allegedly being spread by Pakistan-based hackers. It is said to be spread via popular media like WhatsApp, Facebook, and email, targeting innocent Indian users.

Malware capabilities

The malware can do the following once it is activated:

  • Steal sensitive personal information, including banking information and passwords
  • Provide hackers with unauthorized access to the user's machine
  • Spread even wider by copying itself through compromised contact lists

Official advisory

The Punjab Police has requested people to be vigilant and not click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown sources. In a statement, they reiterated, "Be cautious and alert. The threat is real, and cyber safety is national security."

Recommended safety measures

  • Don't open suspicious e-mails or files, particularly if they have names such as "Dance of the Hillary" or "tasksche.exe."
  • Upcoming antivirus and OS updates on a regular basis
  • Employ two-factor authentication for all important accounts
  • Inform local cybercrime branches or the national cybercrime portal located at www.cybercrime.gov.in in case of any unusual device behavior
