Dadasaheb Phalke Awards 2021: Sushant Singh honoured posthumously, Deepika wins for Chhapaak, Scam 1992 received best series award

Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards 2021 were held in Mumbai on February 20. Sushmita Sen, Kiara Advani, Akshay Kumar, Nora Fatehi and Bobby Deol were among award recipients.

Dadasaheb Phalke Awards is a reputable and prestigious award in the country that every actor desires to win. Every year the award ceremony acknowledges the hard work and bestows the appreciation they deserve. This year’s function was held on Saturday in Mumbai where the best in film, television, music and the new addition, OTT were honoured. From Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar and Sushmita Sen to Surbhi Chandna and Nora Fatehi, celebrated artistes took home awards for their work last year.

Deepika won the best actor female and co-star Vikrant Massey bagged the honour of best actor in a supporting role award for her performance in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak that showed the story of an acid attack survivor, Laxmi Aggarwal.  

Best actor male was given to Akshay Kumar for his character in the horror-comedy Laxmii, of the hit Tamil film Kanchana (2011).

Kiara Advani won critic choice best actor (female) for her Netflix drama Guilty produced under Dharma Production.

Sushant Singh Rajput, who died by suicide last year, was honoured posthumously for his outstanding contribution to Hindi cinema. His last film was Chichhore and it was counted as one of his best films.

The historical drama, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior was presented with the best film honour. The film starred Ajay Devgan and Saif Ali Khan in lead. Anurag Basu was honoured as the best director for his black comedy - Ludo featuring a group of a long cast, including Abhishek Bachchan, Sanya Malhotra, Rajkummar Rao and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Best actor in a supporting role award was given to Radhika Madan for her performance in Homi Adajani’s dramedy Angrezi Medium, co-starring late Irrfan Khan.

For Television, Surbhi Chandna and Dheeraj Dhoopar took home the best actor (female) and (male) awards for their work on the small screen while Dheeraj’s Kundali Bhagya won the best television show honour.

For the first time,  OOT platforms were included in the Dadasaheb awards. Director Hansal Mehta’s blockbuster series Scam 1992, starring Pratik Gandhi received the best series award which is the story of the infamous stockbroker Harshad Mehta. The award for best actor in a web-series (female) was given to Susmita Sen amazing performance in Disney Plus Hotstar show Arya.

Best actor in a web-series (male) was presented to Bobby Deol for his role in Ashram, directed by Prakash Jha on MX Player. The award night was special for Bobby because his father, legendary actor Dharmendra was honoured for his contribution to Hindi cinema for a career that spanned several decades.

Kunal Khemu won the best actor in a comic role for his amusing comedy film that was appreciated by the audience in  Lootcase.
