The violent clash between police and protestors at Ajnala Police Station has raised many questions on the law and order of the state. Waris Punjab De Chief Amritpal Singh travelled from his place to Ajnala Police station, post which his supporters attacked policemen with swords and stones. This incident has given rise to various questions against Punjab’s Intelligence Department.

Reportedly, it’s been almost a month after the retirement of IGP Jatinder Singh Aulakh as Punjab’s Intelligence Chief that the position has been left vacant. Till date, nobody has been given the charge to head the Intelligence Department. From almost a month, Intelligence Chief’s charge is being handled by ADGP but no one has been officially appointed as the Chief of Punjab’s Intelligence Department.

Intelligence Department plays a very important role to maintain law & order in a state. There are speculations that the position of the Intelligence Department’s Chief is not being filled due to a lobby in the bureaucracy. That lobby does not want any other strong position officer to stand in front of them.

Punjab government has always been very strict when is comes to maintaining law & order in the state. Earlier, DG Prabodh Kumar and DGP VK Bhawra were removed from their posts as allegedly they were not able to handle the case of Sidhu Moosewala’s murder.

A senior ex-DGP officer while talking about this matter stated that such an important position like Chief of Intelligence being vacant for almost a month is not a good sign for Punjab’s law & order. He further added that repeated transfers of SSPs might also result in weakening the law of Punjab.
