Diljit Dosanjh recalls being asked to leave Kripan behind or else entry wont be given

Diljit said, "I had always imagined that if I ever attended the Met Gala, I would go looking like a king. This wasn’t a new thought, it was something I carried with me for a long time. So when the opportunity came, I already had a vision. During one of my visits to the Cartier showroom, I jokingly said to them, ‘Will you give me that necklace, the one the kings used to wear? That was originally ours; you people took it.’ They laughed. That necklace was part of a global exhibition, so I couldn’t wear it. But I had a replica made because I wanted to wear something with the same grandeur."

Dilit on manifesting his Met Gala look

The Punjabi singer further said, "At the time, I was shooting for Sardaar Ji 3. I was sitting in my vanity van, thinking deeply about what I’d wear to the Gala. That’s when the emotional part hit me. I imagined an outfit with the map of Punjab on the back and Gurmukhi script written across it. That image alone made me cry. It was such a powerful thought to walk the global red carpet while carrying a piece of my land, my language, and my roots with me."

Diljit Dosanjh on Kripan controversy

Sardaar Ji 3 actor then revealed, "But then came a major issue: my Kripan. When I told the team I wanted to wear my Kripan, they said, ‘You can’t take that in, it’s considered a weapon.’ I explained to them that without the Kripan, my look would be incomplete."

"Eventually, they told me I could carry it backstage for a few photos, but I couldn’t wear it on the red carpet. As I was getting ready, they started rushing me, saying, ‘You’re late, you need to go!’ I didn’t get time to hand it over, so I simply took it with me and sat in the car. Before I stepped onto the red carpet, I was told again: 'You can’t carry this outside. Please hand it to someone.' I said okay, but I also thought: If someone asks for it, I’ll give it. But if they don’t, I’ll walk with it. My look, my story, feels incomplete without it."

"Now here’s where it gets interesting. Shakira was right in front of me in the lineup. Her outfit had so much metal, pins, embellishments, no one wanted to follow her because she’s such a big star, and anyone behind her would lose media focus. But when she walked through the metal detectors, her outfit obviously triggered alarms. That’s when I made a quick decision. I walked behind her. I had my Kripan with me, hidden under my cape. Security was focused on checking her. And surprisingly, they didn’t even check me. It was like a stroke of luck or fate," Diljit added.

He further said, "Once inside, something else touched me deeply. At my table was another Sikh guy, not even assigned there, but he came over to say: 'Paji, whatever you need, I’m here for you.' That feeling of brotherhood, of seeing one of your own at a global platform, meant a lot to me.

And then came Priyanka Chopra. She came up to me and said, 'Diljit, I’m sitting right here. If you need anything, just say "PC" and I’ll be there instantly.' That support, that warmth, was unforgettable."
