What is a ‘Donkey Flight’?

A Donkey flight is an illegal immigration technique used for unauthorized entry into countries. These countries are usually the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK. It is derived from a Punjabi Idiom which roughly translates as ‘to hop from place to place’. It involves nefarious schemes to migrate to the target country, involving being shipped in containers or stopping in nearby countries to gain easier access. This method has gained notoriety among migrants, particularly those from states such as Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat.

Its dangers and struggles have been portrayed in media, such as in Punjabi drama-comedy ‘Aaja Mexico Chaliye’ starring Ammy Virk. Most recently it is also portrayed in Shah Rukh Khan starrer comedy, ’Dunki’.
