Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has confiscated foreign currency amounting to US $41,400 from an Amritsar Airport passenger. The approximate value of the amount confiscated in Indian currency is ₹35.40 lakh.
Acting on particular intelligence, DRI Amritsar regional unit officials apprehended a passenger coming from Dubai on an Air India Express flight on May 29, 2025. After searching the passenger's baggage, the authorities seized foreign currency — $41,400 in American dollars — stashed inside.
Since the amount is more than what is allowed under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), DRI officials seized the foreign currency under the Customs Act, 1962.
Preliminary investigations point towards the suspect trying to smuggle the currency for monetary benefit. This is the second seizure of foreign currency by DRI at the airport this month. Previously, on May 3, a foreign currency worth ₹2.66 crore was seized along with a person.
