Ensuring an Impact: Edu Dept in collaboration with ISB conducts refresher training

With a view to building the capacity of directly recruited school heads through Punjab Public Service Commission, the School Education Department, Punjab has roped in prestigious management institute, Indian School of Business (ISB). Under this unique and first of its kind initiative launched last year, the newly recruited school heads were imparted highly professional training on "Motivation and Leadership" by Bharti Institute of Public Policy(BIPP) under the aegis of Indian School of Business (ISB).

The programme was aimed at to inculcate managerial skills to mobilise human resources and community for bringing in qualitative improvement in school education.

Bharti Institute of Public Policy (BIPP) at Indian School of Business has conducted a three day the Refresher Online Workshop, which concluded on Thursday. As many as 150   directly recruited Principals of Senior Secondary Schoolsof Punjab School Education Department participated. The refresher online workshop was a consequent course, after a year of initial trainings for this group of Principals.

Dr Aarushi Jain, Associate Director, Indian School of Business,and the course coordinator of this training said, “The current pandemic has posed a huge challenge for every sector and education sector has been equally impacted. The workshop is a part of an overarching project titled ‘Improving Quality of Education in Punjab’, that ISB is undertaking with the Department of School Education, Punjab”. “The school level initiatives taken by Principals during this challenging time are commendable and exemplary”, she added.

The unique initiative is among the various dynamic steps undertaken by Secretary Education, Krishan Kumar. The idea is to orient and provide appropriate direction to principals who are at the beginning of their careers. The training has been designed with a special focus on critical roles of principals as decision-makers, team leaders and other functional areas. The goal is to build capacities in government schools in the state and provide the newly recruited principals much needed impetus and exposure on management concepts, said Arushi Jain.

Senior faculty members from ISB and experts from the education sector gave valuable tips to the school principals. Prof Doreswamy Nandkishore, ISB who is a top corporate leader threw light on aspects around Adaptive Leadership and Changes in Management, Prof Rajeshwar Upadhyay, Director, Par Excellence focused on Emotional Intelligence and Interpersonal Relationship, during the training. Dr Aarushi Jain, Associate Director, with the help of case method and simulation helped participants understand the team building process and group dynamics.

Prof Vijaya Sunder, Operations Management faculty at ISB took expert sessions on Project Management during this training. Prof Ashwini Chhatre, Executive Director, Bharti Institute of Public Policy, ISB laid emphasis on the commitment of institute to work closely with the governments and provide management insights to Government Officials to improve public service delivery at the grassroots.

The participants also shared their experiences regarding impact of last year’s training during the three day workshop. Sunil Mehral, Principal, Govt. Sr. Sec. Smart School, Datarpur (Hoshiarpur) who has been acclaimed during the training for his efforts under the BALA Scheme as well as Infrastructure Development said that the training provided a unique opportunity and participants are very excited to be the refresher.

Pardeep Singh, Principal, Govt. Sen. Sec. School, Lalori Kalan, Ludhiana emphasized on vocational courses as well mobilizing community support for improvements at the school. Harnit Bhatia, Principal, GSSS, Channuwala, Moga, aimed to focus on health and hygiene during the pandemic thereby making his school future ready. Kulwinder Kaur, Principal, GSS Smart School Khara, Faridkot focused on Basic Infrastructure and Academics one year after the Introductory Training on “Motivation and Leadership” conducted by ISB.
