A horrendous incident has come to light from Etah district of Uttar Pradesh where a disabled man was duped by an ASHA worker on the pretext of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The 40-year-old unmarried man underwent a vasectomy surgery on July 11 in private conditions.

The victim has been identified as Dhruv Kumar, a native of Bishanpur village in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh. According to the reports, an ASHA worker identified as Neelam Kumari, got Dhruv to the hospital from his home to get the sterilization done so she could earn an incentive.

However, the ordeal of the incident by the victim’s family is different. According to Ashok Kumar, brother of the victim, Neelam came to their house on July 11 and sought permission to administer the Covid-19 vaccine to his deaf and mute brother. She further claimed that Dhruv will get Rs 3,000 for getting his jab. She then took Dhruv to the district hospital.

"Instead of providing COVID-19 vaccine, she got my brother sterilized. My brother was already weak. He fell unconscious after reaching home. We took him to the district hospital. There, doctors asked us to take him to the SN Medical College in Agra," Ashok was quoted as saying by an eminent news agency.

Notably, a doctor at the district hospital told that the vasectomy cannot be done on an unmarried man.

Going by the media reports, the accused Asha worker lied to Dhruv's family in order to achieve the target given to each block by the district health department ahead of World Population Day on July 11. She wanted to earn an incentive of Rs 400 for promoting sterilization, it added.

Pertinently, Dhruv’s family has lodged a complaint however, an FIR is yet to be registered. "Required action will be taken on the basis of the health department’s probe findings," Awagarh police station house officer Manvendra Tyagi said.

On the other hand, Etah Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Umesh Tripathi claimed that the ASHA worker stands at no fault. He further added that Dhruv’s sister-in-law had asked the Asha worker to do sterilization of the former.

“Dhruv is married and has three kids,” claimed the CMO by adding “his wife has abandoned him as he does not do anything to earn livelihood.”

“It is a domestic affair and the medical team need not conduct any probe to know whether he is married,” said CMO.
