In Madhya Pradesh, a farmer couple has deployed four guards and six guard dogs to protect a very rare variety of mangoes in India- Japanese Miyazaki. The ruby-coloured mangoes are one of the most expensive varieties in the world.

The orchardist couple Rani and Sankalp Parihar said that they were given the sapling of the plant by a man on a train. By then, they did not know that the mango saplings would develop and bore into Japanese Miyazaki mangoes.

What is so unique about Miyazaki

Miyazaki is a type of ‘irwin’ mango, also known as ‘Egg of the Sun’, Taiyo-no-Tamago in Japanese. It is different from the yellow ‘pelican mango’. These mangoes are grown in Miyazaki city hence named Miyazaki.

Miyazaki mangoes are often flaming red in colour with a shape like a dinosaur egg. These weigh over 350g and have a 15 percent higher sugar content.

Price

The Miyazaki mangoes are one of the most expensive mango varieties in the world. It is sold at Rs 2.70 lakh per kg in the international market. These mangoes are grown during the peak harvest between April and August.

This variety of mangoes is rich in antioxidants and contains beta-carotene and folic acid. It is great for people that need help with tired eyes. It has a 15 percent higher sugar content. Besides helps in preventing reduced vision.

History

According to reports, the production of mangoes started in Miyazaki in the late 70s. The city has warm weather, with long hours of sunlight and abundant rain. Mangoes are now dominantly produced in the city and are shipped all over Japan. The production volume is second in Japan after Okinawa.
