Azim Premji, WIPRO Chairman, did not donate 34% share of his company to fight Coronavirus

The donation was made by the Premji in mid-March 2019, making him one of the biggest philanthropists in India’s history.

With India going through coronavirus crisis, various fake and misleading news are floating online. Among the many one is of Chairman of WIPRO, Azim Premji.

News broke out that tech giant Wipro's Chairman Azim Premji has donated 34% share of his company which is approximately, 50,000 crores to Government of India to fight the deadly pandemic.

After the news broke out people around India started praising him and called him man with a golden heart. However, WIPRO later clarified that news reports and social media posts of Founder Azim Premji donating Rs 50,000 crore are misleading as the charitable contribution was made in March 2019. Yes, Premji, the then chairman of Wipro had earmarked 34 percent of his shares worth Rs 52,750 crore to an endowment under the Azim Premji Foundation.

The donation was made by the philanthropist in mid-March 2019, making him one of the biggest philanthropists in India history.
