In a heartbreaking development, globally renowned marathon runner Fauja Singh on Monday passed away in a road accident in Jalandhar, Punjab. As per information received, 114-year-old Fauja Singh was out for his routine evening walk around 4 pm near his residence when a speeding car struck him and fled the scene.
After the car rammed Fauja Singh, he collapsed on the road and was rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar by family members, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Fauja Singh, often celebrated globally as the "Turbaned Tornado," "Running Baba," and "Sikh Superman," was a British Sikh of Punjabi Indian origin who rose to international fame as a record-breaking marathon runner in his senior years. Though many of his age-category feats were never officially recognized by world athletics bodies, he shattered numerous records for centenarians in long-distance running.
His personal best in the London Marathon (2003) stood at 6 hours and 2 minutes, while his fastest unofficial time, 5 hours 40 minutes, was clocked at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2003, reportedly at the age of 92.
Punjab Governor mourns the death of Fauja Singh
Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor Punjab & Administrator UT Chandigarh, issued a statement which reads, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and an enduring symbol of resilience and hope.
Even at the age of 114, he continued to inspire generations with his strength and commitment. I had the honour of walking alongside him during the two-day ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march from his village Beas, district Jalandhar in December 2024. Even then, his presence infused the movement with unparalleled energy and spirit.
It is heartbreaking to learn that he lost his life today in a tragic road accident in his village. His legacy, however, will forever live on in the hearts of those fighting for a healthier and drug-free Punjab.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers across the globe. May his soul attain eternal peace."
