After lakhs of employees were fired by various companies in the year 2023, mass layoffs hit US tech giant Google. On Monday, Google fired almost 1000 employees from various teams sending shockwaves among the people working in the tech sector. Now, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has dropped another bombshell announcing that there will be even more layoffs in the year 2024 that the company can invest in their priorities. Not only this, Google CEO Sunday Pichai on mass layoff also explained why the company is unfortunately compelled to do this. A US media report quoted Sundar Pichai's internal memo in which he warned Google Employees of more mass firing. Below is what Google CEO Sundar Pichai's internal memo says-
What did Google CEO Pichai say on mass firing?
In an internal memo to all the employees, Google CEO Pichai said, "We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year.: Pichai further told all Google employees, "The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices."
Pichai pointed out that so far touch choices have resulted in layoffs and restructuring in Google’s hardware, ad sales, search, shopping, maps, policy, core engineering, and YouTube teams. "These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team,” Pichai wrote adding, "But I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted."
Google 2024 layoffs were made to 'remove layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas'. Pichai's memo further said, "Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted."
Google fires 1000 employees
Google 2024 layoff was announced in an email to its employees. Google layoff 2024 email said, "Due to changes in business needs, Google has decided to restructure operations at certain of its facilities, including at the facility (if any) at which you work. This restructuring is scheduled to start on January 10, 2024. Based on this decision, we have had to make some difficult decisions about ongoing employment of some Google employees and we regret to inform you that your position is being eliminated. We recognise how much this impacts you and regret the need to move in this direction."
