Moriondo was born on June 6, 1851, in Turin, Italy in an entrepreneurial family. Almost everyone in his family started something new. Moriondo's grandfather founded a brewing company. Moriondo's father took over the company, and a few years later, he started the popular chocolate company, "Moriondo and Gariglio", with his brother and cousin.

Customers had to wait for the coffee

Moriondo bought the Grand-Hotel Ligure in the city-centre Piazza Carlo Felice and the American Bar in the Galleria Nazionale on Via Roma. Coffee was popular in Italy during Moriondo's time. However, customers had to wait for a long time to make coffee. He thought that this problem could be reduced if several cups of coffee were made at once. With this, more customers will get service and they will be able to increase business.

Moriondo presented his espresso machine at the General Expo in Turin in 1884. He got this machine made by giving all the directions to a mechanic and for this, he was awarded a bronze medal at the General Expo.

Got International Patent

If we talk about the machine, then the machine made by Moriondo had a big boiler which used to pour hot water over the coffee beans. Whereas a second boiler was used to make steam from which coffee was brewed. On October 23, 1885, this espresso machine got an international patent in Paris. Its title was a new steam machinery method for the economical and instant confection of coffee drinks, 'A. Moriondo.' Moriondo continued to improve and patent his invention in later years.
