Happy Birthday Jaya Bachchan: From a phenomenal actor to an outspoken politician

Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan is celebrating her 73rd birthday today, April 9. As she turned a year older, Jaya is busy handling all the wishes that are pouring in on her birthday. Her son Abhishek Bachchan shared a throwback sweet picture of Jaya Bachchan writing, “Happy Birthday. Love You.”

The actor had a successful career in Bollywood and is best known for her roles in movies like Mili, Zanjeer, and Bansi Birju. She is also a politician, a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha and is forthright.

On her 73rd birthday, let’s have a look at Jaya Bachchan’s remarkable journey from being a spectacular actress to an outspoken politician:

Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh on April 9, Jaya Bachchan began her journey in the film industry as a teenager. She made her film debut from Satyajit Ray’s 1963 film ‘Mahanagar’. Jaya’s first role as an adult was in the 1971 film Guddi which was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Since then she is recognized for reinforcing a naturalistic style of acting in both mainstream and ‘middle of the road’ cinema. The veteran actor was noted for her refreshing performance in films like Uphaar in 1971, Koshish in 1972, and the 1974 film Kora Kagaz.

She gave many hit movies, and among them, she can be seen romancing with her husband Big B of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan. Together they have acted in movies like Zanjeer, Abhiman, Chupke Chupke, Mili, and Sholay. 

The two had tied a knot on the 3rd of June in 1973 in front of family and friends.

During her astonishing career, she won eight Filmfare awards including three for best actress and three for best-supporting actress. The actor is the most-awarded performer in the female acting categories, besides Nutan. 

She was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Earlier, in 1992, Bachchan was awarded Padma Shri by the government of India for her contribution to Indian cinema.

After the actor quit her acting career in Bollywood and she took a turn towards Indian politics. She was first elected in 2004 as a member of parliament from the Samajwadi Party, representing Uttar Pradesh. Jaya Bachchan was re-elected in 2012. Since the beginning of her political career, she has been very outspoken of her opinions and is not afraid to say what's in her mind.

The Samajwadi Party leader and senior member of the Bollywood film fraternity, Jaya Bachchan has always backed Bollywood. 

In Sushant Singh’s suicide case, Jaya Bachchan took her stance about the whole controversy and said, “I completely disagree. I hope that the government tells such people not to use this kind of language. Just because there are some people, you can’t tarnish the image of the entire industry.”
