Udit Narayan began his career as a playback singer in the early 1980s with the film Unees Bees and has since sang in over 140 Hindi films. He's also done playback for films in various Indian languages and has a number of solo and duet albums to his credit. Udit Narayan turns 66 today.  On the occasion of his 66th birthday, we take a look back at five of the Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan recipient's most renowned songs.

PAPA KEHTE HAIN (1988)



Papa Kehte Hain, from the 1988 tragic romance film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, is one of the most memorable songs from the 1980s. This Anand-Milind composed song, written by poet and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri, captured the hearts of youths all throughout India. This is the first time Udit Narayan has done all of the male vocals playback in a film. For the song, he also won his first Filmfare Award.




PEHLA NASHA (1992)



During the early 1990s, Pehla Nasha from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) became a youth song. This duet track, produced by Jatin-Lalit and sung by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam, was also penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The song expresses the feelings that come with first love.




MITWA (2001)



Lagaan, a film about a ragtag bunch of guys from an Indian hamlet who compete in a cricket tournament against the British Raj, received a slew of significant international awards and eight National Film Awards, including one for Udit Narayan for the song Mitwaa, which was written by Javed Akhtar. This song, created by A.R. Rahman, also features Sukhwinder Singh, Alka Yagnik, and Srinivas on vocals.



AISA DES HAI MERA (2004)



The peaceful yet powerful version of this late Madan Mohan tune from the film Veer-Zaara by Udit Narayan instils in Indians a strong sense of nationalistic pride. The music, which was created by Zaved Akhtar, also stresses the differences between India and Pakistan.



YEH TAARA WOH TAARA (2004)



For the playback of this iconic music from one of the best modern Hindi-language films, Swades, Udit Narayan earned his third National Film Award.The music was composed by A.R. Rahman.
