India Trending Surya-Tilak

Entire India on Wednesday turned 'Rammay' and celebrated Ramnavami 2024 with full fervor. The 2024 Ramnavani was a special affair as it was the first time devotees celebrated the arrival of Ram on Earth in Ayodhya Ram Temple. It was the first Ramnavami after the Pran Prathista Ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya Temple in Uttar Pradesh. For the unversed, Rama Navami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  To make the occasion special, priests, architects, and scientists planned a unique 'Surya Tilak' event on 2024 Ramnavami. As a result, Ramnavni 2024 in Ayodhya mesmarised lakhs and crores of Hindu devotees around the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also watched the Surya Tilak of Ram Lalla on his flight. Now, the question arises what is Surya Tilak, and how it was created? Below is everything you need to know-

What is Surya Tilak that took place in Ayodhya Ram Temple?

Surya means sun Tilak means applying vermillion on forehead. The only difference the lights of the Sun acted like a vermillion and the rays of the sun came directly on the forehead of Ram Lalla. Hence, it can be said that the Sun god himself applied his vermilion of light on the forehead of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya.

The Surya Tilak was created using cutting-edge scientific expertise. A 5.8-centimetre beam of light hit Ram Lalla idol's forehead. To achieve this remarkable phenomenon, a specialised instrument was designed. As per reports, a team of ten Indian scientists was stationed at the Ram Mandir to ensure the success of this auspicious event on Ram Navami 2024. For approximately 3 to 3.5 minutes starting at 12 noon, sunlight was precisely directed onto the statue's forehead using a combination of mirrors and lenses.

Scientist and Director at the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Dr. Pradeep Kumar Ramacharla was quoted by a news portal explained the science behind Surya Tilak and said, "The optomechanical system consists of four mirrors and four lenses fitted inside the tilt mechanism and piping systems. The complete cover with an aperture for the tilt mechanism is placed at the top floor to divert the sun rays through mirrors and lenses to the Garbha Girha...The final lens and mirror focus the sun rays on the forehead of Shree Ram facing east. The tilt mechanism is used to adjust the first mirror's tilt, sending the sun rays towards the north direction to the 2nd mirror to make the Surya Tilak on every year's Shree Ram Navami."
