This Hyderabad doctor pledges to donate Rs 350cr for medical field

Dr Ravindranath Kancherla announced to donate Rs 350 crore to build the world-class non-profitable medical university.

Founder of Global Hospital Group Dr Ravindranath Kancherla on Tuesday pledged to donate Rs 350 crore (which is 70 percent of his wealth) to build a world-class non-profitable medical education, research and innovation university in Hyderabad, said Global Hospital Group. 

What is the dream project of Dr Ravindranath?

 The 65-year-old gastroenterologist is in the process to build up a Global HealthTech University and Innovation Hub (GHUIH), a non-profit institution, which would provide world-class treatment to Indians and the global population. GHUIH would consist of a top medical university and hospital on a global scale with multi-disciplinary research and innovation focus.

The average investment is around $100 million and the expected time period required for the construction is seven years. The medical university would consist of around 750 to 1000 beds and would be a health-tech innovation hub with advanced medical technology and human resources.

50 percent of the capital, required for the investment, would be generated by the donation given by Dr Ravindranath and the leftover would be generated by the contribution of his friends, and the family from the pharmaceutical, medical and technology fraternity. 

Dr Ravindranath Kancherla stated, “GHUIH is being established in Hyderabad to provide a new model for sustainable development of medical infrastructure…This institution is first-of-its-kind in India and among few in the world. I have pledged 70% of my wealth for this cause and appointed executors for my registered will to ensure the project goes on stream despite any eventuality.”

Who is Dr Ravindranath?

Dr Ravindranath is an expert gastroenterologist, he was a part of the team which tried to revive BJP leader Pramod Mahajan after he was shot in his Mumbai home in April 2006. He has also played an important role in establishing a multi-organ transplantation program in India. These organ transplantation programs were for the liver, kidney, lungs, heart and pancreases.
