The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings due to decrease in temperatures and the subsequent dense fog in the northern regions of India. Among those, Punjab’s staple dense fog has blanketed the state reducing visibility to mere meters. According to the Meteorological Department, an orange alert has been issued in the state regarding dense fog on Monday and Tuesday.

Dense fog (visibility of 50-200 metres) blanketed isolated pockets of Punjab, with Amritsar recording the lowest visibility across the country at 25 metres this Monday morning. Flights from the city had to be delayed due to adverse foggy conditions in the region. Jalandhar and Ludhiana also saw dense fog in the morning. The Weather department warns that although less fog will be there during midday, visibility will be very low in the evening.

According to the department, there will be a reduction in fog on December 27, but the minimum temperature is expected to drop by 2-3 degrees.

Shockingly, in 9 districts of Punjab, the temperature has fallen below Shimla’s recorded temperature. The district of Ludhiana is considered to be the coldest, where the temperature has reached 4 degrees Celsius. Apart from this, at least 5 degrees Celsius has been recorded in Amritsar, Faridkot, Firozpur, Gurdaspur and Ropar.
