India continues to remain under dark clouds of 2nd wave, records over 4 L fresh cases

Maximum deaths were reported in Maharashtra with 853 people losing their lives to Covid, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 350 daily deaths.

India has recorded 4,14,188 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours -- the highest so far, along with 3,915 fatalities, taking the total number of cases in the country to 2,14,91,598, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Friday.

Maximum deaths were reported in Maharashtra with 853 people losing their lives to Covid, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 350 daily deaths.

India's total tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,14,91,598 with 36,45,164 active cases and a total of 2,34,083 deaths, so far.

It is the third time after May 1 that India has crossed the four lakh mark of active cases in the last 24 hours. On Thursday, India recorded 4,12,262 cases and a total of 3,31,507 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours.

It is the 15th straight day when India recorded more than three lakh cases while over 3,000 casualties have been reported for the last nine days.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 29,86,01,699 samples have been tested up to Thursday (May 6) for Covid-19. Of these 18,26,490 samples were tested on Thursday.

The Health Ministry said that a total of 16,49,73,058 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 23,70,298, who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.

The top five states that have reported a maximum number of coronavirus cases are Maharashtra with 62,194 cases, followed by Karnataka with 49,058 cases, Kerala with 42,464 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 26,622 cases and Tamil Nadu with 24,898 cases. Around 49.55% fresh cases were reported from these five states with Maharashtra alone responsible for 15.02 per cent of the new cases.

Meanwhile, states like Kerala and Rajasthan have imposed lockdown given increasing cases, allowing only essential services to operate and vaccination centres to function.

On the other hand, international aid is pouring in for the nation to fight the battle against the deadly second wave.  Countries like the United States, the United Kingdom among other nations are sending medical supplies such as ventilators and medical equipments. American civil rights Reverend Jesse Jackson has urged US President Joe Biden to release 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine for India.
