India reports 1.84 lakh new Covid cases, 1,027 deaths, highest death count in nearly 6 months

India reported 1,84,372 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, setting another grim one-day record, taking the overall tally to 13,87,825 on Wednesday, according to the data issued by the Union Health Ministry. As many as 1,027 people succumbed to the disease, which increased the death toll to 1,72,085. A total of 83,339 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries to 1,23,36,036 with a recovery rate of 88.92 per cent.

According to the ICMR, a total of 14,11,758 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, while so far, 26,06,18,866 samples have been tested.

India is now the fourth-worst Covid affected country worldwide after the number of active cases rose to 13,65,704.

The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (3,519,208), Kerala (1,172,882), Karnataka (1,074,869), Tamil Nadu (940,145), and Andhra Pradesh (928,664).

A total of 26,46,528 people were also vaccinated in the same period, taking the total inoculation count to 11,11,79,578.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with over 60,000 new cases and 281 deaths in the last 24 hours. On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government had imposed lockdown-like curbs in the state from 8 pm on April 14 till 7 am on May 1. Section 144 has been imposed in the state and only essential services will be allowed for the next 15 days. The state recorded 60,212 cases in the last 24 hours. While the state has flagged the issue of shortage of beds and oxygen.

Delhi saw 13,468 new Covid-19 cases, its highest single-day count so far and 81 deaths. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday urged the central government to cancel the CBSE board exams, given the grim scenario. 

The Centre has decided to fast-track emergency approvals for COVID-19 vaccines that have been authorised by Western countries and Japan, paving the way for possible imports of Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Moderna shots. Russian-made Covid Sputnik V has been cleared for emergency use in India.
