Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori inaugurated the oxygen plant based on pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology at NHS Hospital, Kapurthala Road on Friday; the plant can produce medical oxygen at the rate of 750 liters per minute.

While kick-starting the oxygen plant, the DC lauded the efforts of NHS Hospital to tackle the O2 shortage, especially amid the soaring demands for oxygen. He mentioned that the hospital management had started working on this project following the administration’s appeal to all major hospitals and industries to install PSA-based plants.

The Deputy Commissioner called upon other healthcare and industrial establishments to follow the same course of action by setting up such plants at their premises. He stated that this would not only reduce oxygen demands but also make Jalandhar a self-reliant district in terms of oxygen production besides bailing out oxygen generation plants burdened with soaring demands. He said that if other institutions installed such plants, the saved oxygen could be diverted to other patients who desperately need this life-saving gas, which would save more lives.

Mr. Thori said that installing such plants was a one-time investment aimed at enabling such establishments to be self-reliant in production, which is the need of the hour. He urged other institutions to install such plants or buy oxygen concentrators so that soaring demands could be checked.

Throwing light on the steps taken by the district administration to tackle oxygen demands, the DC said that a multi-pronged strategy has been adopted by the authorities encompassing installation of oxygen plant at civil hospital, deployment of oxygen concentrators in the facilities, setting up post-Covid recovery ward in the government hospital, and an oxygen concentrator bank for patients requiring oxygen support at home.
