Jiah Khan suicide case verdict: Sooraj Pancholi found not guilty, acquitted due to lack of evidence

Almost 10 years after Bollywood actress Jiah Khan was found dead at her home, the Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Thursday declared its verdict in which the late actress' boyfriend and Bollywood actor Sooraj Pancholi was prosecuted on abutment to suicide charges. In the Jiah Khan case, the special CBI Court found that Bollywood actor Sooraj Pancholi not guilty, and therefore he was acquitted of all charges. Judge AS Sayyed of special CBI court in Mumbai. observed that due to paucity of evidence, this court can’t hold you (Sooraj Pancholi) guilty, hence acquitted. Sooraj had arrived at the CBI court with his mother Zarina Wahab. Notably, the final arguments in the Jiah Khan case had concluded last Thursday and it was reported that on April 28, the final verdict will be delivered. Notably, Jiah Khan's case was among the high-profile case on which the people of India were keeping a watch. In fact, there were many hashtags already going on in which people were seeking justice for Jiah Khan. Furthermore, after the mysterious death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, fans were demanding speedy trials of such high-profile cases. Despite of multiple online campaigns, the Jiah Khan case took almost 10 years.

Jiah Khan's suicide Case

For the unaware, Jiah Khan was an American citizen who came to India to become a Bollywood actress. Jiah was also doing great in Bollywood as she starred in movies like Ghajini opposite Aamir Khan and even romanced veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan in the controversial movie Nishabd. However, in a tragic and shocking development on June 3, 2012, Jiah was found hanging at her Juhu residence by her mother Rabiah. On June 10, the Police recovered Jiah Khan's suicide note in which she had allegedly narrated the ordeal she faced while being in a relationship with Sooraj Pancholi. Based on Jiah Khan's letter, Sooraj Pancholi was booked under section 306 (abetment to suicide) and later he was arrested as well. However, Jiah Khan's mother Rabiah was not happy with the abutment to suicide charges and she claimed that her daughter was murdered and therefore she movies to the Bombay High Court alleging that the local Police did not properly investigate Jiah Khan's case.

As a result, the Bombay HC on July 3, 2014, transferred the case from the Juhu Police Station to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). CBI too took cognizance of Jiah Khan's note and the investigative agency stated that in her letter she had narrated the pain, intimate relationship, physical abuse, and mental and physical torture at the hands of Sooraj Pancholi which ultimately led drove her to take her own life.

It is pertinent to mention here that Sooraj Pancholi is the son of Bollywood couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab. He is currently out on bail in the case. During the investigation, the CBI had alleged that the letter seized by the Mumbai police, which first probed the case on June 10, 2013, was written by Jiah Khan and it clearly mentioned Sooraj Pancholi.
