'Home more dangerous than battlefield': Kargil veteran’s wife among victims in Manipur women paraded video

The Manipur women paraded video incident has indeed shocked the nation with debate on 'women safety & security' again grabbing the spotlight. While the entire India is awaiting for justice for women who were publically paraded without clothes & gang-raped by a mob of men, it has come to light that one of the victims is the wife of a Kargil veteran. For the unversed, a horrific video took the internet by storm initiating shockwaves in the political fraternity after it showed two women being paraded, molested, and groped in Manipur's Kangpokpi. Opposition leaders have raised questions about the safety of women and the role of police in maintaining law and order. Not only this, PM Modi addressed the media before the start of the Monsoon session saying that no culprits will be spared and justice will be done. Two to three days have passed after the video surfaced, and one of the victim's husbands has broken his silence.

As per reports, the husband of one of the women seen in the video is an ex-army man who also fought in the Kargil War. He had served in the Indian Army as a Subedar of the Assam Regiment. He was quoted by a Hindi News Channel in which he expressed his anguish and disappointment by his own countrymen. "I fought for the nation in the Kargil war and was also in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. I protected the nation but am dejected that after my retirement, I could not protect my home, my wife and fellow villagers." Not only this, he demanded action against the accused. Not only this, he also revealed that "Police were present but took no action. I want all those people who burnt the houses and humiliated the women to get exemplary punishment."

As per the FIR registered, around 900 to 1000 mob of men carrying sophisticated weapons including rifles entered a village on May 4. They forcefully entered the victims' village. Following that all of them started to vandalize all the houses, looting them before setting them ablaze, leaving the villagers homeless. Seeing the horrific situation, five villagers escaped from the spot into the forest. Among the five, there were three women. Later they were rescued by local Police from the forest. However, when they were on their way to Police Station the mob surrounded them. Following that the mob snatched five villagers from the Police about 2 km away from Nongpok Sukmai Police Station and then whatever happened was recorded on the video. The mob killed one of the men and gang-raped one of the women in front of everyone. Following that the women were paraded.
