A new chapter for Kashmir is scribbled as Vande Bharat now runs between Katra and Srinagar. The launch of the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is being hailed as a game-changer for Jammu & Kashmir. For the first time, residents, pilgrims, and tourists can travel swiftly and comfortably between Katra and Srinagar in just about three hours, thanks to India’s flagship high-speed train.
Covering 272 kilometers, the route not only slashes travel time by nearly half but also crosses two engineering marvels — the iconic Chenab Railway Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge — offering a breathtaking journey through the Himalayas.
Service schedule and train timings
Running six days a week, the service operates two pairs of trains (26401/26402 and 26403/26404), with four daily trips:
- From Katra: 8:10 AM and 2:55 PM
- From Srinagar: 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM
- Key Stop: Banihal

Built for the mountains
These trains are specially designed for Kashmir’s terrain and climate. They’re equipped with:
- Heating systems for icy temperatures
- Heated windshields and insulated toilets
- Seismic dampers to ensure safety and performance, even in harsh winters
This high-speed rail link is expected to boost tourism, ease pilgrimage travel to Vaishno Devi, and connect people across the region like never before. For the Kashmir Valley, it’s more than just a train — it’s a step closer to seamless integration with the rest of India.
