Mamata Banerjee’s brother dies after battling Covid-19 for a month

Ashim Banerjee, 60-year-old, was under treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata after testing positive for coronavirus.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s brother Ashim Banerjee died due to Covid-related complications at a private hospital in Kolkata. He was 60 years old. Ashim was undergoing treatment after he contracted the virus. 

The last rituals would be performed on Saturday afternoon as per Covid protocols. 

Dr Alok Roy, Chairman of Medica Super-speciality hospital said, “He had tested positive for Covid-19 and was undergoing treatment.”

West Bengal has reported 20,846 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the caseload tally of the state over 10.94 lakh. At the same period, 136 patients lost their lives. 

As per the statics by Union Health Ministry, Bengal is among 12 states that cumulatively account for 79.7 percent of India’s total active cases.

Today, India's total tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,43,72,907 with 36,73,802 active cases and 2,66,207 deaths so far.
