In a shocking development, a small plane crashed into an electric power line tower in Maryland, USA, leaving the two occupants dangling about 100 feet in the air for hours. The Maryland plane crash knocked out power to thousands of people in the area for much of the evening. After the plane crashed into the electric pole, a pilot and a passenger were stuck in the tower, however, they were soon rescued. As per US media reports, the plane crash resulted in a power supply cut to nearly 100,000 homes and businesses. Furthermore, both the pilot and the passenger were taken to a local trauma center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein was quoted by US media saying that they sustained hypothermia, orthopedic and trauma-related injuries. He said they were 'able to assist with their removal' from the plane. Notably, hours before the rescue, Montgomery County Public Schools canceled classes for Monday, as did Montgomery College. In addition, the crash in the Gaithersburg area curtailed operations on the Metro Red Line, and at least two hospitals.
The Police identified the Pilot as Patrick Merkle, 65, of Washington, D.C., and passenger Jan Williams, 66, of Louisiana. The two were rescued roughly seven hours later, with Williams being brought down from the plane first, followed shortly after by Merkle. Talking about the plane, it was a single-engine Mooney M20J that crashed into Pepco tower lines near Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg, Maryland, around 5:40 p.m. (US Time) Sunday, as per the Federal Aviation Administration.
