MayDay! New Delhi records coldest May Day in 70 years, wettest in 35 years

Delhi’s maximum temperature during the day was lower than that of Srinagar.

According to India Meteorological Department, on Wednesday, Delhi had received 60 mm rainfall till 8:30 in the evening, which is the highest precipitation in May in the last 35 years. Delhi had received record rainfall in May in the year 1976. This record-breaking rainfall was the impact of cyclonic storm Tauktae and a western disturbance. 

The city too recorded a maximum temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius, which was 16 notched below normal. In May it is the lowest reported temperature since 1951.

Reason

As per the IMD, cyclone Tauktae and a western disturbance resulted in a rainstorm. The capital city had recorded 60 mm of rainfall in a period of 24-hours on May 24 in 1976, and in 2021 it recorded 60 mm between 8:30 am to 8:30 pm.

R K Jenamani, senior scientist, National Weather Forecasting Centre said, “This is rare in the city May is generally a dry month. Delhi gets a maximum of 30 mm to 40 mm rainfall this month. The rain only lasts for an hour or less.”

On Wednesday, Delhi’s maximum temperature during the day was lower than that of Srinagar. Delhi’s recorded temperature was 23.4 degrees Celsius which was less than that of Srinagar (25.8 degrees Celsius). 

Due to heavy rainfall and strong winds, Delhi’s air quality saw an improvement. Capital city recorded air quality in the air quality index in the satisfactory category. It was 78 on Wednesday and 93 on Tuesday.
