Milkha Singh’s wife, Nirmal Kaur succumbs to Covid-19, Punjab CM extends condolences

India’s legendary sprinter Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal Kaur passed away because of Covid related complications. Nirmal Kaur was 85-year-old. She was captain of the Indian women's volleyball team. She was also appointed as the Sports Director for women in the Punjab Government.

As per the statement issued by Milkha Singh’s family, Nirmal Kaur breathed her last at 4 pm on Sunday. Milkha Singh would not attend the last rites of his wife as he is admitted to the ICU.

A spokesperson of the Milkha family said, “We are deeply saddened to inform you that Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh passed away after a valiant battle against COVID at 4 PM today,”

“A backbone of the Milkha Family, she was 85 years old. Tragically, the Flying Sikh Milkha Singh Ji could not attend the cremation which was conducted this evening itself as he is still in the ICU (of PGIMER in Chandigarh) himself.”

Nirmal Kaur was admitted to the hospital on May 26, after she was tested positive for Coronavirus. She was treated at the Fortis Hospital, Mohali. Milkha Singh was also admitted to the same hospital because of Covid-pneumonia but was discharged after a week after the request of the family. 

Later, Milka Singh was admitted to PGIMER, Chandigarh and reportedly, his condition is continuously improving.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh mourned the passing away of Nirmal Milkha Singh. His condolence message read, “I am saddened to learn about the death of one of the iconic volleyball players who brought several laurels for the country thus making every Punjabi proud. My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends. ”

She is survived by her husband, one son, and three daughters. Her son Jeev Milkha Singh is also a renowned Golfer.
