The picture of Viresh Kumar Bhawra, Punjab's Director General of Police, has been used inappropriately online. By adding the DGP's photo to their WhatsApp ID, the thugs sent messages to the Deputy Commissioners in numerous districts. When the issue was discovered, the Punjab Police issued a warning to the entire state asking anyone who receives a WhatsApp message with the DGP's image to report it to the cyber crime cell.

Several deputy commissioners of the state had messages from the mobile number +91-74369-06364, which had a photograph of Punjab DGP VK Bhawra. According to reports, the criminals were reportedly demanding money in these communications, although the police department has not yet confirmed this. When the Deputy Commissioners who received the message talked to the DGP, it became clear that this is a fraud.
