Mallika Sherawat discussed the abuse she received following her controversial sequences in Murder and how she was "almost morally assassinated." She believes that the public's image of actors has changed. Mallika made her acting debut in the film Khwahish in 2003. She starred in Murder the next year. Both films were noted for their daring scenes and cemented her reputation as a sex symbol.

Mallika said, “When I acted in Murder (2004), I was almost morally assassinated for those scenes I shot; I was seen as a fallen woman. Today, those things I did back then are common in our films. People’s perceptions have changed. Our cinema has changed.”

She added, “But even now, when I think of it, nothing beats the cinema of the 50s and 60s. We had wonderful roles for women, but we lack that beauty in our films in a big way. I have waited for years to get a role that has substance”

Murder, directed by Anurag Basu, starred Mallika in the role of Simran, a woman trapped in a terrible marriage with Sudhir, played by Ashmit Patel. She begins an affair with Sunny (Emraan Hashmi), her previous lover, after an unpredictable meeting. She terminates the relationship due to remorse, but he is determined to win her back no matter what it takes.

Mallika made her digital debut alongside Tusshar Kapoor in the ALTBalaji series Booo Sabki Phategi in 2019. In the web series, she played a ghost alongside Krushna Abhishek, Sanjay Mishra, Kiku Sharda, and Shefali Jariwala.
