
According to the Islamic calendar, there are twelve months, named - Al-Muharram, Safar, Rabi-al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Zu al-Qadah, and Zu al-Hijjah, in a year. The number of days in the Islamic calendar is either 354 or 355, 11 days less than that of the Georgian calendar.
Muharram is the second holiest month after Ramadan. The Islamic New Year is also known as Hijri New Year, which is the first day of Muharram. The first day marks the migration of Prophet Mohammad from Mecca to Medina.

In 2021, it is expected that the Islamic New Year would begin on August 10, if the moon is sighted on August 9, 2021. The beginning depends on the sighting of the moon and the beginning would be announced by the West Asian countries. This time, it would be called Hijri 1443 – AH, it would symbolize that it has been 1443 years since Prophet Mohammad was forced to leave Mecca and was shifted to Medina.
Muharram 2021: History
The first time month of Muharram was celebrated in 662 AD when Prophet Mohammad and his companions were forcibly migrated from Mecca for spreading Islamic culture. He returned to the city back in 629 AD after the conquest of Mecca. It’s been 1443 years since the event happened.
Muharram 2021: Significance
Muharram means “impermissible.” It is the month of recollection. Muharram is one of the holiest months in the Islamic Lunar Calendar, during this month Muslims do not participate in any kind of warfare. Muslims recite Holy Quran and offer prayers this month.
The month holds special significance for Shia Muslims, a section of Islam other than Sunnis. For the first ten days, Shia Muslims mourns Imam Hussain’s martyrdom. Imam Hussain was the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, who was martyred in 680 AD during the Battle of Karbala.
