Mumbai:  Continuous rains have slowed down the busy life of Mumbai as the city received a record-breaking volume of rainfall in the past 24 hours. At least 35 people were killed across the state while 23 died in Mumbai alone in various accidents caused by the heavy rain.

A wall collapsed in Malad on Tuesday, killing 21 people and injuring 78 others. The wall fell on tin huts behind it, trapping many under the debris for several hours.
Fourteen people were killed in other rain-related incidents across the state in the past 24 hours.

The rainfall during the 24-hour period was 375.2 mm, the official said, quoting data from the Santa Cruz-based Mumbai Regional Centre of the IMD.

Train and bus services were widely affected by the downpour while flight movement was also affected in Mumbai. Several flights were diverted from the Mumbai airport as others were delayed for hours.

A small dam called Tiware in Tehsil Chiplun of Ratnagiri collapsed causing a flood-like situation in 7 downstream villages on Wednesday. Bodies of two persons have been recovered by the civil administration so far.

At least 22-24 people have reportedly gone missing. Around 12 houses near the dam have been washed away.

Mumbai airport saw many passengers trapped as flight services were hit by heavy rainfall. Altogether 54 flights were diverted and 52 canceled at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport due to rainy weather.

A SpiceJet flight from Jaipur skidded and overshot the main runway on Tuesday. All passengers were evacuated safely.
