Nainital cut off from Uttarakhand as heavy rain, landslides block roads

Uttarakhand has received heavy rainfall and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured that Army helicopters will soon arrive to assist in relief and rescue operations underway in the state.

On Tuesday, Uttarakhand has received very heavy rainfall and various parts of the state have been lashed out especially the Kumaon region. Many have been trapped under debris and the death toll has been increasing, in the last two days, heavy rainfall and landslides have claimed 16 lives. 


Nainital has been cut off from the rest of the state with three roads leading to the popular tourist spot blocked due to a series of landslides. 


On Tuesday, 11 people lost their lives and many are trapped in rubble because of the landslides and cloud burst, told Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. He further asked people not to panic, saying all necessary steps are being taken to evacuate them to safety. He also said people do not continue their Char Dham Yatra until weather conditions in the state improve.

He further assured that three Army helicopters will soon arrive to assist in relief and rescue operations underway in the state. Two of these helicopters will be sent to Nainital and one to the Garhwal region to rescue people stranded at different points.


The Chief Minister has also taken an aerial survey of the state with the State Disaster Management Minister Dhan Singh Rawat and state DGP Ashok Kumar. He tweeted, “Did an aerial survey of the areas affected by excessive rain and reached Rudraprayag to take stock of the damage caused by the disaster. Instructions have been given to the administration to extend all possible help to the people affected by the disaster. Disaster Management Minister on this occasion @drdhansinghuk and DGP Ashok Kumar stayed with him.”

He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to him on the phone to take stock of the situation and assured him of all necessary help. 


Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has also asked his party workers in the state to help people in every possible way. Delhi CM tweeted, in Hindi, “Distressing news about damage caused by the calamity is coming from Uttarkhand. I pray to Baba Kedarnath for everybody's safety. Appeal to all workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to help people in every possible way in this difficult time”.
