National Award-winning Bengali director Dasgupta passes away at 77, Mamata Banerjee pay condolences

For a long period, the director had kidney problems and had to go to dialysis twice a week.

Buddhadeb Dasgupta, a well-known Bengali filmmaker, died on Thursday morning at the age of 77. He had kidney illness and was on dialysis on a regular basis at his home in Kolkata.


Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, resorted to Twitter to express her condolences after learning of his death. His death was described as a "great loss" for the Bengali film industry.


Banerjee wrote, "Saddened at the passing away of eminent filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Through his works, he infused lyricism into the language of cinema. His death comes as a great loss for the film fraternity. Condolences to his family, colleagues and admirers".

For much of the 1980s and 1990s, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, together with Goutam Ghose and Aparna Sen, was the face of Bengal's parallel film movement. For mainstream actors, a film with the auteur secured a coveted National Award triumph.

'Dooratwa' (1978), 'Grihajuddha' (1982), and 'Andhi Gali' (1984) were all about the Naxalite movement in Bengal and how it affected Bengalis' collective consciousness.


Condoling his death, filmmaker Goutam Ghosh said, “Buddha da was making films, writing articles and active despite failing health. He had directed Tope and Urojahaz even when he was not well. It is a great loss for all of us.”


During his career, the celebrated director won five National Film Awards for Best Feature Film, including ‘Bagh Bahadur' (1989), ‘Charachar' (1993), ‘Lal Darja' (1997), ‘Mondo Meyer Upakhyan' (2002), and ‘Kaalpurush' (2008), and his films Dooratwa (1978) and Tahader Katha (1993) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali.

For his films Uttara (2000) and Swapner Din (2005), he received the Best Director Award.
