National Sports Day celebrated by Surjit Hockey Society and Academy in Jalandhar today

Olympian Rajinder Singh graced the event as special guest and motivated budding players to actively participate in sports tournaments.

The country's renowned Surjit Hockey Society and Surjit Hockey Academy jointly celebrated National Sports Day and the birthday of the great hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand.

Addressing the players and their parents at a simple but impressive function held at the local Guru Gobind Singh Stadium today, Punjab Chief Hockey Coach Olympian Rajinder Singh (Dronacharya Awardee) highlighted the history and significance of National Sports Day.  He said that the  sports are important for the physical and mental health of human beings.

Speaking on this occasion, Iqbal Singh Sandhu, General Secretary, Surjit Hockey Society and Academy while congratulating the players on National Sports Day and the birthday of the great Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand and briefed the sporting achievements of Major Dhyan Chand.


He said that he was part of the three-time Olympic gold medal winning Indian hockey team at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and Major Dhyan Chand was elected captain of the Indian hockey team.  

He further said that Major Dhyan Chand had scored more than 400 international goals in his career from 1926 to 1948 while he had scored nearly 1,000 goals in his entire career.  To pay homage to such a great sportsperson, the Government of India decided to celebrate his birthday in 2012 as National Sports Day, Sandhu added.

On this occasion Chief Coach Hockey (Punjab) Olympian Rajinder Singh, General Secretary of Surjit Hockey Society Iqbal Singh Sandhu, Chief PRO  Surinder Singh Bhapa, Coach Davinder Singh, Coach Parmjit Kaur, Naresh Kumar, Gurmeet Singh etc. were present.
