Jharkhand Assembly Election: Naxals blow up bridge in Gumla district, no casualties reported

As polling in Jharkhand was underway, Naxals has blown up a bridge in Bishunpur in Gumla district. No injuries have been reported so far. Deputy Commissioner Shashi Ranjan says that the attack has not affected the voting process

As polling in Jharkhand was underway, Naxals has blown up a bridge in Bishunpur in Gumla district. No injuries have been reported so far. Deputy Commissioner Shashi Ranjan says that the attack has not affected the voting process.

The first phase of polling for the Jharkhand Assembly election begins today. Thirteen constituencies in six districts of Jharkhand will go to polls in the first phase of the Jharkhand Assembly election today, in which a state minister and state PCC president are key contestants. 

A total of 37,83,055 electorate, including 18,01,356 women and five third gender voters, who are eligible to exercise their franchise will decide the fate of 189 candidates in the first phase. The polling that is spread over five phases, will conclude on December 20 and the result for the same will be announced on December 23. 

The first phase will witness several constituencies including Naxal-affected areas, like Latehar, Lohardaga, Chatra, Gumla, Manika, Panki and Daltonganj. The BJP is contesting in 12 seats in the first phase, while it is supporting Independent Vinod Singh from Hussainabad. The opposition alliance of the JMM, Congress and RJD is contesting in four, six and three constituencies, respectively. Prominent candidates in the fray are BJP nominee and Jharkhand Health Minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi and Jharkhand PCC president and ex-IPS officer Rameshwar Oraon.

The voter turnout in Jharkhand was 7.12 per as recorded at 9 am on Saturday.

Lohardaga - 11.68 per cent
Daltonganj: -10.07 per cent
Panki: -9.02 per cent
Vishrampur: -9.5 per cent
