Charanjit Singh Channu, a Dalit leader, has been elected as Punjab Chief Minister on Sunday. The appointment of Mr Channi has come after three days of high political drama in the poll-bound state that was contributed by the resignation of Amarinder Singh on Saturday.
On Sunday night, Channi met Punjab Governor and would take oath at 11 am on Monday.
“We have presented our stance, unanimously supported by party MLAs, before the Governor. The oath-taking ceremony will be held at 11 am tomorrow,” news agency ANI quoted him.
Channi, 47-year-old, was born in Makrona Kalan village, near Chamkaur Sahib and later his family settled in Kharar, where he worked as the municipal councillor for three terms and went on to become the President for two more.
Meanwhile, the names of Ambika Soni, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Sunil Jakhar were also circulating. But at last, Channi was selected unanimously, the news was shared by Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat. In a tweet, Rawat said that Channi has been unanimously selected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab.
Rawat’s tweet read, “It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. #CharanjitSinghChanni has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab.”
