Charanjit Singh Channi – the new Chief Minister of Punjab

Congress has announced the successor of Captain Amarinder Singh and the new Chief Minister of Punjab. Charanjit Singh Channi is new Punjab CM, announced Congress's high command.

Amarinder Singh’s replacement included former PCC chiefs Sunil Jakhar and Pratap Bajwa and state ministers Sukhjinder Randhawa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Tript Rajinder Bajwa. But Punjab politics saw a major twist and Charanjit Singh Channi was selected as the new Punjab Chief Minister, whose name was announced by Congress High Command on Sunday.

Earlier there were reports that Sunil Jakhar would become the new Chief Minister of the state but as the demand for Sikh face rose, Sukhjinder Randhawa was considered but at last, Channi was selected as the Chief Minister.

Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has welcomed the decision of Congress High Command and said that he is happy for his “Young Brother.”

The news was shared by Punjab Congress in charge Harish Rawat. In a tweet, Rawat said that Channi has been unanimously selected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab.

Rawat’s tweet read, “It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. #CharanjitSinghChanni has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab.”

Now, the state would have two Deputy Chief Ministers.

Yesterday, Capt Amarinder Singh resigned from the post of Chief Minister. The key political development came after speculations of a no-confidence motion against Capt were aired. 

Later, Capt stated that he would not support Navjot Singh Sidhu as Chief Minister as Navjot has close relations with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan. 

In an interview with a reputed news agency, furious Capt Amarinder has linked Sidhu’s probable election as new CM to the matter of national security. “Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, is a close friend of his," said Capt adding that "Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has a relation with Sidhu.”
