Olympic medalist hockey player living in Jalandhar booked for allegedly raping Instagram friend

An FIR has been filed against Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Indian Hockey Team player Varun Kumar by a woman in Bengaluru.

In a massive development, Indian Hockey player Varun Kumar has been booked under the POCSO act after a woman accused him of raping her for 5 years. Hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Indian hockey player Varun Kumar was reportedly living in Jalandhar, Punjab. An FIR has been filed against Varun Kumar by a woman in Bengaluru. As per the woman, she was 17 when she met Varun through Instagram in 2019. The woman who is now 22 im her complaint stated alleged that Varun Kumar raped her several times in the past five years, on the pretest of marriage. 

 

Reports suggest Varun Kumar "is on the run and a search is on to trace him." As per a newswire, the woman has alleged that after forcefully physically exploiting her for five years, the accused was avoiding her and refusing to marry. Though the victim approached the police earlier, since the accused was representing the Indian Hockey team and is a popular player, they did not act on the case and gave them time for compromise. Since, the accused did not keep his word, the police finally booked him.

 

Bengaluru Police official stated that the accused had represented a Hockey India League and committed the crime while staying in Bengaluru. To be precise, the complainant stated that Varun Kumar developed physical relationship with her during his visit to Bengaluru's Sai stadium for coaching camps.  

 

It is pertinent to mention here that the Himachal Pradesh government had announced a prize of Rs 1 lakh for him after the Indian Hockey team won the bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics.
