With the increase in numbers of coronavirus cases, the number of cybercrimes in the country is also increasing. Cybercrime and phishing scams have menace these days and police continuously suggest people to remain aware of these frauds.

In most cases, victims hesitate to file a complaint and cybercrime goes vastly undercounted. Now, police are encouraging victims to file complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and say that it is the best portal to file cybercrime complaints.

What happens is that the offender of cybercrime cases is detected in other states. So it gets difficult for police to travel to another state for investigation. For this, they have to acquire special funds and transport facilities for investigation.

But, the National cybercrime portal launched in 2019 is connected to nodal officers in each state and fast-track cross-border investigations. The cases are segregated then handed over to jurisdiction police stations for further investigation.

A senior officer with the cybercrime police station explains that a complaint from Bengaluru may lead to an offender in Rajasthan. So instead of sending a team from here, they can connect with the nodal officer in Rajasthan. This saves time and resources as well.

“This portal makes it easier for people to file a complaint since they cannot physically get to the station,” a senior police official added. Additional director-general of police, railways, Bhaskar Rao advised citizens to use the portal to register complaints against cyber fraud.

At the time of the pandemic, most cases are related to matrimonial, QR code, financial and job frauds. Recently cases are mostly linked to black-marketing of remdesivir and oxygen concentrators.

“The police have issued countless warnings against sharing OTP and bank details with anonymous callers,” Rao said.

According to an investigation officer crimes related to women and children like child pornography, the transmission of obscene material, capturing obscene content, bullying, and stalking are on the rise.
