Member Parliament from Patiala, Preneet Kaur today wroteto the Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, raising the issue of therising number of cases of contract marriage fraud for the purpose of gettingCanadian PR and urged the external affairs ministry to work closely with theCanadian High Commissioner and the Canadian Government to solve this marriagefraud crisis.

In her letter to the External Affairs Minister, she alsosought setting up a Commission to assess the scale of the fraud marriage crisisin India and analyse the number of cases and volume of fraud. 

Preneet Kaur hasalso urged the ministry to develop a method to investigate such cases andrecommended establishing a mechanism to deport people defrauding innocentcitizens under the scam of fake marriage to redress the injustice encounteredby victims.

Underlining her concern towards the imploding crisis,especially in the wake of prevailing economic condition which is forcing peopleto relocate to foreign lands to seek education or employment or to be withtheir families, the Patiala MP in her letter pointed out that the "allureof attaining a permanent residence in Canada has facilitated a few greedypeople to take advantage of innocent Indian citizens and fraud them of largeamounts of money through contract marriages and marriage fraud."

This has led to substantial financial losses for manyfamilies resulting in despair and depression, even compelling people to commitsuicide in some cases, she further pointed out.
