In a sudden posting on social media, ex-US President Donald Trump praised the leadership of India and Pakistan as "strong and unwaveringly powerful." He attributed some part of what he termed a "historic and heroic decision" between the two countries to the United States, although no concrete agreement was specified.
"I am very proud of the strong and resolutely powerful leadership of India and Pakistan… I am proud that the USA was able to help you make this historic and heroic decision," Trump said.
He also intimated intentions of increasing economic ties, saying, "While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade substantially with both of these great Nations."
In a suggestive mention of the enduring Kashmir conflict, Trump signaled his willingness to help resolve it: "Also, I will work with you both to see if, after a 'thousand years,' an arrangement can be made regarding Kashmir."
The remark has caused a stir abroad, considering the delicacy of India-Pakistan relations as well as the prevailing complexity surrounding the Kashmir issue.
