
ThePunjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday congratulatedWeightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu for her stupendous achievement of baggingthe Silver medal for India in 49 Kg category at Tokyo Olympics thus opening themedal tally for the country.
Earlier,the Chief Minister tweeted, "Our first medal! Congratulations to SaikhomMirabai Chanu for winning Silver at Tokyo Olympics with a combined lift of 202kg in women's 49 kg weightlifting event. India is super proud of youraccomplishment."
Meanwhile,the Chief Minister also congratulated her Assistant Coach Sandeep Kumar underwhose constant guidance, Chanu honed her skills to perfection thus bringinglaurels for the country.
Notably,Assistant Coach Sandeep Kumar hails from village Bara in Jalandhar district andhad participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics besides 1998 Commonwealth Gamesheld in Qualalumpur (Malaysia) winning Bronze medal (69 Kg category) in thelatter event. He is serving with the Punjab Police as Inspector and is atpresent posted at Sports Centre in PAP Jalandhar.
