Punjab flood update: School holidays extended over safety concerns, missing PRTC bus found in Beas river

Seeing the continuation of the worsening situation due to floods in many parts of Punjab, State Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Thursday announced that all schools will remain closed till July 16.

Many parts of Northern India have been witnessing the monsoon mayhem as a flood-like situation has been looming over Punjab and Delhi. While Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are already under wraps of flooded water, many parts of Punjab are submerged in water sparking flood threat in the bordering state. Seeing the continuation of the worsening situation due to floods in many parts of Punjab, State Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Thursday announced that all schools will remain closed till July 16. The decision to keep the schools remain shut was taken as a precautionary measure suggested by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann informed Harjot Bains on his Twitter handle. While it was expected that the situation in Punjab will improve with time, the weather in Himachal Pradesh has ruined all the predictions. Due to the constant rain in Himachal Pradesh, the water level of Satluj has risen drastically boosting the current as well. Although Bhagwant Mann-led government has deployed the NDRF team and Jalandhar MP Sushil Rinlku working on the ground with them, there are reports which suggest that lives have been lost recently. As per reports, 14 districts in Punjab are in the grip of floods. Their 1,058 villages are affected. Rescue operations have been intensified in the state after the Bhakra Beas Dam management decided not to release water for the next three days. Hazare's bridge over the Satluj River in Ferozepur has been washed away. Due to this about two dozen villages have been affected. Around 60 villages in Ferozepur have been submerged in water. The Patad-Khanori bridge in Patiala was also washed away. Due to this, the connectivity of Sangrur Road to Delhi has been cut. Furthermore, torrential floods killed 2 people. Rivers were seen overflowing with strong currents near Khanauri, Sangrur. As per reports, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann will take stock of flood-affected areas in Sangrur today. On Friday, Punjab CM i expected to go to Fazilka and Ferozepur. Furthermore, there was a crack in the Ghaggar at Khanauri in Sangrur. After which the Sangrur-Delhi highway has been closed. At the same time, in view of the danger after waterlogging, now the Ludhiana-Hisar National Highway has also been closed to traffic.

Furthermore, a video of a missing PRTC bus being swept away in the Beas River has surfaced on the internet. According to the President of Punbus Union, Chanan Singh, both the driver and conductor of the bus were found dead. Still, no information has been provided regarding the passengers who were travelling on the bus.
