Amidst a storm of successive criticism from the opposition parties over the deteriorating state of law and order in Punjab, the Bhagwant Mann-led government ordered a series of restrictive measures to put a gag on the prevalent scenario, including the imposition of a complete ban on songs glorifying gun culture and violence besides, public display of firearms.

The slew of other measures released through an official order by the state government, mentions the review of arms licenses in the coming three months and if found issued to the wrong person will be canceled with immediate effect. The direction was issued to the Police administration to lodge the case by registering an FIR against those promoting enmity and indulging in hate speech against any community.

The AAP government in the state has been making high-profile transfers in the state’s police department in an attempt to check the status of the law-and-order situation in the state, besides facing a series of strong criticism from across the opposition parties as well.

Punjab in the last 10 days has witnessed two major killings one in Amritsar of a high-profile Hindu leader Sudhir Suri and a Dera Follower Pradeep Singh in Faridkot.

The order from the state’s Home department addressed to the police head, commissioners of police, and senior superintendents of police said the chief minister had issued directions to take steps to maintain law and order in the state.

The order has also detailed the imposition of a ban on carrying and displaying weapons at public gatherings, religious places, wedding ceremonies, and other events which has remained a point of concern for Punjab.

In the coming days, surprise checks will be conducted at different places, the order said, the roadmap for which has been laid down internally to provide much-needed stability in the state grieving with a series of unrests.
