Punjab government allows liquor and other shops to open till 15th May

Experts doubt the rationale of allowing liquor when other businesses are not being permitted to operate in Punjab, is the latter’s right to earn livelihood second-class?

The Punjab state government under the leadership of Chief Minster Captain Amarinder Singh has released the latest update to the lockdown in the state till 15th May.

Shops selling essential items were already exempt.

And now, four more businesses have been permitted, but only from Monday through Friday till 5 pm.

These are:

·        Shops selling fertilizers, seed, insecticides, pesticides, agriculture machinery, agriculture / horticulture implements, etc.

·        Kirana and grocery shops including PDS shops.

·        Retail and wholesale liquor vends (but ahatas not to open).

·        Shops selling industrial materials, hardware items, tools, motors, pipes, etc.

Further, free movement of people on foot of bicycle for permissible purposes is allowed.

For motorised traffic, valid identity cards, or e-pass arranged in advance and displayed are required.
