Punjab politics: Captain’s party likely to merge with BJP this month; Amarinder will get big responsibility

Former CM Captain Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) would merge with the BJP.

Former CM Captain Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) would merge with the BJP. In July, this merger will take place. Amarinder Singh recently traveled abroad for spinal surgery. He might go back to India next week. The procedure in this regard will begin once he returns. Following this merger, BJP may entrust Captain Amarinder Singh with a big responsibility. The BJP is also concentrating on 13 seats in Punjab, particularly with the Lok Sabha elections to be held in 2024.

Following his exit from the Congress, Captain Amarinder Singh established a new party. He contested the Punjab Assembly elections under the name of the Punjab Lok Congress Party. In which he had an alliance with the BJP. However, they were unsuccessful. Along with party candidates, he also lost the Patiala seat.

After Captain Amarinder Singh left the Congress, a large number of Congressmen were expected to join him. But this didn't happen. Former Congress MLAs Fatehjung Bajwa and Rana Gurmeet Sodhi joined the BJP before the elections. After the election, veteran Sunil Jakhar also joined the BJP. Following this, former Congress ministers Rajkumar Verka, Balbir Sidhu, Sham Sundar Arora, and Gurpreet Kangar joined BJP. With the merger of Captain's party, his MP wife Preneet Kaur may also enter the BJP. However, a decision will be taken after the Captain's discussion with the BJP in this regard.
